Out and About

Running errands is easy with a breastfed baby! You won't have to pack bottles of formula, so you can even stay away from home longer than planned. Your breast milk is always available at the perfect temperature for your baby. Just grab some diapers and go!

If you feel awkward or embarrassed breastfeeding around others, try practicing first in the comfort of your own home. Breastfeed in front of a mirror or with a friend or family member. Practice makes perfect – the more familiar you are with breastfeeding your baby, the easier it will get to do it anywhere!

Once you are ready to try it outside your home, it might be a good idea to ask your peer counselor to go with you. Ride the bus, go to the park, or explore the mall together. She can give you tried and true tips for discreet breastfeeding in public.

Mom to Mom Tips

Try draping a blanket over your shoulder to cover baby. Some babies will not like this so try it at home first.

Wear the right outfit. Something with a top and bottom (i.e., pants or a skirt) will be easier than a dress.

Wear a top you can pull up or unbutton from the bottom up.

Slings are great for breastfeeding! Make sure you follow the manufacturer's instructions for infant slings very carefully. Check the Consumer Product Safety Commission before buying a sling.

Be aware of where you're looking. If you are looking down at baby, people might look there, too. Try looking at people's faces to shift their attention away from your baby.

Learn your baby's feeding cues. This will give you time to get into a comfortable place or position BEFORE your baby gets fussy or cranky.
