Effects of Alcohol

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) considers limited alcohol intake to be safe and permissible for breastfeeding mothers. However, moderate to heavy drinking (i.e., two or more alcoholic drinks per day) should be avoided since it can interfere with your let-down reflex, harm your baby's motor development, and cause slow weight gain. If your baby is a pre-term infant, you should not drink at all.

If You Have An Occasional Drink

• Limit your alcohol intake to occasional use

• Don't drink before you breastfeed. Wait until after you breastfeed or until the alcohol clears your body.
