Babies feed at different time intervals. On a daily basis, most babies nurse every 2-3 hours during the day, with one 4-5 hour period of sleep. Some babies cluster feed in the late evening and sleep longer at night. Other babies need to be fed every 2 to 3 hours during the night. Some moms try to wake their babies during more frequently during the day to encourage them to sleep longer at night.

You're not the only one who is wondering; many moms have this question. New babies need to wake up several times during the night to feed. These nighttime feedings help meet your baby's growth and developmental needs. Feeling tired is a normal part of life with a new baby. Give yourself time to adjust.

Night Feedings Help Babies Grow

One of the nicest advantages of breastfeeding is that you can do night feedings in a side lying position and continue to rest while meeting your baby's needs. There are no bottles to get up and prepare. Many moms enjoy late night feedings as one of the few moments they get to spend alone with their babies.

Nighttime feedings are important for building and maintaining your milk supply. Babies need the important nutrition night feedings provide for growth and development. Night feedings also help prevent your breast from becoming overly full.

Survival Tips

Rest when your baby rests.

  • Newborns take frequent – but brief – naps.
  • Get into a pattern of napping when your baby naps.
  • Remember – this won’t last forever!

Get all the help you can.

  • Ask for help with chores and shopping to allow you more time with your baby.

Limit visitors.

Begin to establish a bedtime routine.

  • Put pajamas on.
  • Brush teeth.
  • Read a story.

Keep your baby close at all times – especially at night.

Find a sleeping arrangement that works for you.

Create a dark, quiet, un-stimulating sleep environment.

Have a plan for the middle of the night.

  • Try nursing lying down.
  • Have your partner bring your baby to you.
  • Resist the urge to talk with your baby when breastfeeding – make middle of the night feedings “business” feedings.
  • Use a night light and keep everything in arms reach – so you don’t have to stumble around in the dark.
  • Don’t look at the clock.

Try not to focus on how many times you are up during the night. Enjoy those private nursing moments.

Resist the urge to compare your baby with others.

Helping Baby Sleep

Will feeding my baby solid food help him sleep?

Mothers hear that starting solids or giving cereal helps baby to sleep longer. This advice is dangerously outdated. Adding solids to the diet does not help baby sleep longer. In fact, it causes more night waking because of digestive problems.

This can quickly become a disaster, as your baby is crying, screaming and becoming constipated. The safest choice is to wait until the baby is developmentally ready before introducing any solids, juice or infant cereal.

Most babies are developmentally ready for solids around 6 months.

Will feeding my baby formula help him sleep?

Many mothers believe that giving their babies a bottle of formula will help them sleep through the night. This can actually make matters worse! Formula is not easily digested and often causes stomach problems for the baby.
