Avoiding Pollutants

Unless there is heavy exposure to toxins, you don't need to be concerned. The benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the risks of pollutants. Babies who are breastfed are healthier and breastfeeding may lessen the negative effects of some chemicals in the environment.

Tips to reduce the risks of many toxic chemicals:

• Wash your hands before and after preparing food

• Wash fruits and vegetables

• Eat fewer processed foods, which can contain unhealthy chemicals

• Be aware of local fish advisories

• Damp-wipe surfaces and mop floors in your home

• Use non-toxic cleaning products

• Open windows while you clean

• Vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture once or twice weekly
