Beyond A Year
Time spent with your baby passes quickly, but the bond created by breastfeeding your child will last forever.
If you are pregnant or nursing a new baby, nursing a toddler may seem hard to imagine. Somehow the weeks turn into months, and before you know it, you will be nursing your one year old. If you are nursing an older baby, congratulations!
You may feel thrilled about nursing your older baby, but at times you might also wonder if this will ever end. These are all normal feelings. How long you breastfeed is a mutual decision between you and your baby.
Do not allow cultural and social expectations to pressure you into making decisions about breastfeeding. Do what's best for you and your baby – listen to your instincts, listen to your heart.
Talk to your peer counselor; she will help support your decision.
Benefits Beyond a Year
Not only does breastfeeding beyond infancy benefit your child, it offers health benefits for you too. Being aware of these benefits may help you find support and encouragement to continue breastfeeding beyond infancy. The amazing thing is that the benefits of breastfeeding increase as you continue to nurse your child – the longer you breastfeed, the more the benefits add up for your child and for you.
